Palace in Chałupki

Chałupki Castle, also known as the palace, stands about 300 metres from the bridge over the Oder and the Polish–Czech border crossing. It is a residence with a defensive past, surrounded by traces of a moat and old fortifications. The historic building now houses a hotel and restaurant, while the grounds include a park with tree-lined paths and flower beds.

History and architecture

The first written reference to the site dates from 1373. Its owners included the Hohenzollerns, the Donnersmarcks and the Lichnowskys; in 1846 it passed to the Rothschild family. The present palace was rebuilt at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries in the Baroque style, retaining earlier elements. It has a rectangular plan, a mansard roof and a north-western tower topped with a dome.

What to see

Clear traces of the moat and parts of the former bastion fortifications survive around the palace, especially on the south-west side. Look for the Rothschild coat of arms above the entrance. The park is suitable for a short walk, and the location near the Oder and the border makes it easy to combine the stop with Chałupki, Bohumín or the Racibórz area.
