Church of Peace in Świdnica

The Church of Peace in Świdnica (pronounced roughly "shvid-NEE-tsah") is the largest wooden Baroque Protestant church in Europe and, together with its twin in Jawor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Set in Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland, it looks like a modest half-timbered building from outside, but inside it explodes with color, tiers of galleries and carved Baroque woodwork. If you are wondering whether it is worth the trip from Wrocław, the answer is a clear yes.

A church built against the odds

The story begins with the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War in 1648. It allowed the Lutherans of Habsburg-ruled Silesia to build three "Churches of Peace," but Emperor Ferdinand III imposed strict rules: outside the town walls, no tower, and only temporary materials such as wood, clay and straw. Architect Albrecht von Säbisch designed a timber-frame structure, and it went up in roughly ten months. The first service was held on June 24, 1657. A separate bell tower was only added in 1708.

The church still serves a small Lutheran (Evangelical-Augsburg) congregation today. After 1945, when the German population was expelled and the region became part of Poland, the parish shrank from thousands to about a hundred members.

What to see inside

The interior covers 1,090 square meters and holds about 7,500 people across the ground floor and four levels of galleries, reached through 27 doors. Highlights include:

• the altar (1753) and pulpit (1729) by Gottfried August Hoffmann,
• the organ built in 1909 by Schlag & Söhne, with 62 stops and nearly 4,000 pipes,
• a painted ceiling and gallery panels covered in Biblical scenes and emblems,
• private boxes of noble families and merchant guilds.

The church is also a concert venue and hosts an annual Bach Festival.

How long to spend

A self-guided visit with the recorded commentary takes about 40 minutes; allow 1–2 hours for the whole Peace Square, including the bell tower, former vicarage and historic cemetery. The church is wheelchair accessible. There is a café on site (7Niebo) and even guest rooms in a historic building. Ask in advance about English-language guided tours.

As of October 2026, according to the parish website (admission is a donation ticket in Polish zloty):

• Tickets: adults PLN 18; students, seniors and adult groups PLN 15; children and teens PLN 10; family (2 adults + children under 18) PLN 45.
• Opening hours: April–October Monday–Saturday 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Sundays and holidays noon–6:00 p.m.; shorter hours from November to March.
• Closed on Good Friday, November 1 and December 24. A service is held on Sundays at 10:00 a.m.

How to get there

Świdnica is about 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Wrocław, which has the nearest international airport. By car it takes roughly an hour; regional trains also connect the two cities.
