Basilica of St James and St Agnes in Nysa

The Basilica of St James and St Agnes in Nysa, often referred to as the cathedral, is one of the largest and most valuable Gothic churches in Silesia. It stands on Cathedral Square near the market, and its hall interior, monumental bishops’ tombs and neighbouring bell tower form an exceptional historic complex. It is a strong choice for visitors interested in architecture, sacred art and the history of the former Duchy of Nysa.

From Romanesque beginnings to Gothic form

Tradition links the first stone church with a consecration in 1198. The present three-aisled interior, with aisles of equal height, was built in 1401–1430. Later centuries added chapels and works of art, as well as the tombs of Wrocław bishops. The basilica was rebuilt after wartime damage and received the title of minor basilica in 2009.

Artworks and bell tower

Inside, look for the monumental tombs of eight Wrocław bishops, the Gothic Virgin and Child, a painting by Michael Willmann and the vaults of the chapels. The late-Gothic bell tower beside the basilica dates from 1474–1516. It houses the St James Treasury with chalices, monstrances and other liturgical objects; check the current offer before planning the treasury or crypts.

Practical visit

Entry to the church is free, and self-guided visits take place outside Masses during the basilica’s visitor hours. Ask the Pilgrim Centre about access to the treasury, crypts and guided routes. Combine the basilica with the market square, the Triton Fountain and a walk through Nysa’s historic centre.
