Lakes
Poznań, Greater Poland
Lake Rusałka (roughly "roo-SOW-kah") is a wooded reservoir on the western edge of central Poznań, about 4 km from the Old Market Square. Locals come here to swim in summer and to walk, run and cycle the lakeshore loop the rest of the year. It is one of the easiest nature escapes in the city — but it also carries a dark World War II history that makes a visit more than just a stroll in the woods.
Poznań sits in western Poland, roughly halfway between Berlin and Warsaw (about 2.5–3 hours by train from either). The city's green "wedges" run from the outskirts toward the center along small river valleys, and Rusałka lies in the western one, along the Bogdanka stream, between the districts of Sołacz, Golęcin and Wola. Poznań-Ławica airport is about 7 km from the city center.
Rusałka is not a natural lake. During the German occupation, work began in May 1941 to dam the Bogdanka, and it took about 16 months. The labor was done by Poles and Jews held in forced-labor camps in Poznań; gravestones from the demolished Jewish cemetery on Głogowska Street were used to line the bottom. The Germans called the reservoir Elsensee after a nearby mill. After the war it was renamed Rusałka, after the water nymphs of Slavic folklore.
The surrounding forest is also a memorial landscape. In January 1940 the SS executed prisoners from Fort VII — one of the first Nazi camps in occupied Poland — in these woods. Three monuments on the north, south and east shores mark the sites; the eastern one commemorates about 2,000 victims.
If you have a spare half-day in Poznań and want greenery rather than museums, yes. In autumn and winter the beach is closed but the trail stays open and free, 24/7. Don't walk on the ice: the lake is shallow (average 1.9 m) but fed by streams, so the ice can be unreliable. Signage is in Polish; the route is easy to follow without it.
By public transport, take a tram to the Ogrody stop, then walk about 20 minutes along Botaniczna Street to the trail on the south shore — check current routes with ZTM Poznań or the Jakdojade app. Tickets are paid in PLN (złoty). Cyclists can follow the Bogdanka valley from Sołacki Park. Drivers can reach the beach via Golęcińska Street, but parking fills up on hot summer weekends.
