Lakes
Nysa, Opole
Lake Nysa (Jezioro Nyskie, say "yeh-ZHOR-oh NIS-kyeh") is a large reservoir on the Nysa Kłodzka river, right on the western edge of the town of Nysa in southwest Poland. Covering about 20 km², it has sandy beaches on its northern shore, marinas, and long embankments that are great for walking and cycling. In summer it is one of the Opole region's main spots for swimming and sailing; off-season it is a quiet place to watch birds with the border mountains on the horizon.
Nysa lies about 85 km south of Wrocław, the nearest airport, and roughly an hour by car from Opole. National road 46 toward Kłodzko runs along the lake. The beaches and resorts are mostly at Skorochów on the eastern shore, a short drive or bike ride from Nysa's center. Parking is next to the resorts and may be paid in summer; access to the shore itself is free.
The lake is man-made. It was built in 1971 and went into operation in 1972; several villages (Brzezina Polska, Miedniki, Różanka and part of Głębinów) were cleared and flooded. Its main job is flood control: a permanent flood reserve of 55.8 million m³ out of a total capacity of over 120 million m³. A small 4.8 MW hydropower plant runs on it, and the water helps keep the Oder navigable. During the 1997 "flood of the millennium" emergency releases from the dam flooded parts of Nysa. In September 2024 the cascade of reservoirs on the river again ran in flood mode and the town was badly hit; how those days were managed is still being reviewed.
The supervised beach season is short: in 2026 the Akwa Marina bathing area ran from June 26 to August 31. In midsummer cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms are a recurring problem, and in July 2026 inspectors closed the bathing area several times, so check the official status before you swim. Water levels change with flood-control needs. In autumn and winter (as of October 2026) there are no lifeguards or beach facilities; stay off the ice.
As a destination on its own, mainly in summer. For most visitors it works best as a relaxing half-day added to Nysa's fortress and old town, or to Paczków and Otmuchów a little farther west. Signs and services are in Polish; bring cash or a card for PLN payments at kiosks.
In Nysa, see Fort Prusy and the Nysa Fortress Trail, the Market Square and St. James' Basilica. Lake Otmuchów, the upper reservoir of the cascade, lies about 12 km to the west, close to Otmuchów Castle.
