Lake Klimkówka

Lake Klimkówka (kleem-KOOF-ka), also called Lake Klimkowskie, is a reservoir on the Ropa River in the Low Beskids, a quiet range of wooded hills in southeastern Poland. Hemmed in by forested slopes and dotted with small coves, it is a designated quiet zone where motorboats are banned. In summer a municipal waterfront offers beaches and a viewing tower; in the fall it is a peaceful place for a walk or bike ride among changing leaves.

Where it is

The lake lies a short drive south of the town of Gorlice, about 2.5 hours by car from Kraków. Public transport in this rural corner of the Carpathians is sparse, so plan on driving. The nearest sizable city with an airport is Kraków; Rzeszów is an alternative.

History of the reservoir

Work on the dam began in the 1970s and the reservoir was filled in 1994. The 37-meter dam closed the Ropa valley at its narrowest point, flooding the old village center of Klimkówka and the former road. The lake covers about 306 hectares, stretches roughly 6.5 km and is up to 31 m deep. It protects the valley from floods, supplies drinking water to Gorlice and Jasło, and feeds a small hydroelectric plant. Movie trivia: soon after filling, the lake stood in for the Dnieper River in the Polish epic "With Fire and Sword."

Things to do

The main access point is the Klimkówka Water Station, owned by the Ropa municipality and staffed in summer. It has a three-level waterfront, a mooring jetty, 15 small beaches, a viewing tower, a barbecue shelter with restrooms, and lit walking and cycling paths linked to a roughly 4-km county trail along the shore. In season, private operators rent kayaks and pedal boats and run a snack bar.

Swimming and low water

In August 2026 local officials said that persistent low water meant no lifeguarded swimming area had been designated in 2025 or 2026. Swimming is not banned – it is at your own risk – and water-quality tests have shown no problems. Expect wide, stony shores; water shoes help.

Opening season, fees and tips

The Water Station season runs June 15 – August 31 (as of October 2026). During the season there are fees for vehicle entry/parking and camping, set by the municipality and paid in Polish złoty (PLN). Outside the season there are no staff, lifeguards or rentals, so treat the lake as a scenic stop. Signage is mainly in Polish.

Who it suits

Families will like the shallow beaches and the absence of motorboat noise; cyclists and walkers can follow the lit shoreline paths; campers can pitch a tent or park a camper van in season for a fee. The northeastern shore is steep and forested, while the southwestern side along the road is low and easy to reach, so that is where most visitors gather.

Getting there

From Gorlice or Nowy Sącz, drive through Ropa on the county road toward Wysowa and take the third paved turnoff signposted for the Water Station (the first leads to the dam, closed to visitors).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are exploring the Low Beskids: combine the lake with the region's wooden churches – some of which are UNESCO-listed – and the small spa town of Wysowa-Zdrój. It is not a resort lake, which is exactly its charm.
