Hubertus Festival in Świerklaniec

In autumn, usually on a Saturday in October, the historic park in Świerklaniec becomes an arena for riders, hunters and foresters. The programme usually starts around noon and lasts several hours; check the municipality notice for current timing, admission and parking details.

The programme

The highlight remains the traditional fox chase, in which riders in historic costumes pursue a fox suspended from a line. It is accompanied by greyhound races (Russian and English borzois), a period costume contest and birds of prey displays featuring hawks, falcons and owls. The event is child-friendly.

The setting of a little Versailles

The park is what remains of the residence of the Henckel von Donnersmarck family. Between 1868 and 1875 Guido Donnersmarck built a palace here for his first wife, Blanca de Païva, associated with the work of the French architect Hector Lefuel. The palace burned down in 1945 and its ruins were demolished in 1962 — foundations and terraces survive. What remains are the Cavalier Palace, the sculptures of Emmanuel Frémiet (including the famous lions) and the landscape park that hosts the Hubertus.

Getting there: Świerklaniec, Parkowa Street; the event takes place in the central part of the park, near the fountain and sculptures. Nearby attractions include Lake Nakło-Chechło (4.1 km) and the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry (7.5 km).
