The Giecz Stronghold

The Giecz Stronghold, now the Early Piast Archaeological Reserve, lies on the Piast Trail. It was an important centre of the state of the first Piasts. The reserve includes stronghold remains, an archaeological exhibition, an 18th-century wooden church and a bell from 1515.

Stone foundations and church remains

The most important trace of Giecz’s former status is the stone foundation of an unfinished palace building from the early 11th century, interpreted as a palatium with a chapel. The site also preserves remains of a pre-Romanesque stone church, while the neighbouring market settlement contains traces of a Romanesque church. Research reveals successive building phases and daily life.

Church, bell tower and exhibition

Inside the reserve stands the 18th-century wooden church of St John the Baptist and Our Lady of Consolation. A bell tower on the rampart houses a bell cast in 1515. The exhibition pavilion presents finds from the excavations and the history of the stronghold and Giecz castellany. Take time to walk the site calmly: its key elements are spread among the ramparts and archaeological remains.

The reserve is a branch of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica. Address: Grodziszczko 2, 63-012 Dominowo, Poland. Hours vary by season; in 2026 the exhibition operates from March to December, with holiday closures and Mondays closed. Check prices, free-admission days and lessons or guide options online.
