Chopin Manor in Duszniki-Zdrój

The Chopin Manor in Duszniki-Zdrój (say "DOOSH-nee-kee ZDROO-y"), formerly the Spa Theater, is an elegant white pavilion in the spa park of a small resort town in southwestern Poland. In summer 1826 a 16-year-old Frédéric Chopin gave a charity concert here — his first performance outside his homeland. Since 1946 the hall has hosted the International Chopin Festival, the world's oldest piano festival held without interruption. For music lovers it is one of the most meaningful Chopin sites outside Warsaw.

A spa theater from the 1800s

The building went up between 1802 and 1805 as the social hub of the spa, then known by its German name, Reinerz, when the region belonged to Prussia. It was designed by H. Geissler and built by local craftsmen together with several other buildings framing the spa square; a billiard room was added in 1808. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings of the resort.

Why Chopin came here

Chopin arrived with his mother in August 1826, right after finishing school in Warsaw, to take the waters on doctors' orders — walks and spring water at set hours. At the Spa Theater he played a benefit concert for a family that had lost its breadwinner, even though, as he complained in a letter to his teacher Józef Elsner, the local pianos were poor. Look out for:

• a boulder with a bronze medallion of Chopin from 1897,
• the Chopin statue by Jan Kucz in front of the south entrance, unveiled in 1976 for the 150th anniversary of his visit,
• the Pieniawa Chopina mineral spring in the park.

The International Chopin Festival

The first festival took place on August 25–26, 1946, to mark 120 years since Chopin's concerts. It now runs every August; the 81st edition was held in 2026. Expect recitals by winners of major piano competitions, candlelit late-night "Nocturne" concerts and masterclasses. Tickets sell out early, so book well ahead on the festival website. Smaller spa concerts take place in the manor throughout the year.

Visiting: opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

• The town's tourist website lists the manor as open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. for a token fee (paid in złoty, PLN); every visitor gets a postcard to stamp.
• Hours change during concerts, and some visitors report finding it shut, so check with the tourist office first: +48 74 866 94 13.
• The visit itself is short; allow about an hour including the park, monuments and pump room.
• Is it worth visiting? Yes, especially combined with a concert or the nearby Table Mountains.

How to get there

Duszniki-Zdrój lies in the Kłodzko Valley on national road 8, about 120 km (75 miles, roughly two hours by car) southwest of Wrocław and its airport, and close to the Czech border. Trains run on the Kłodzko – Kudowa-Zdrój line. The spa park is a short walk from the market square.
