Wooden Marian Church in Wolbrom

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wolbrom, locally called the Marian or Hospital Church, stands at the corner of Mariacka and Tadeusza Kościuszki streets. This early Baroque larch-wood church belonged to a former hospital complex.

History and architecture

The church was built in 1638 as a hospital church funded by Father Marcin Wolbram. The complex stood in the Łobzowskie suburb, where a hospital for the poor had existed since the 14th century. Conservation began in 1986; the church entered the heritage register in 1996 and was reconsecrated in 2008. The Board describes a wooden Baroque building with log construction, a single nave, a polygonally closed presbytery, a north-side sacristy and a western porch. The façade has a curved Baroque gable with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

What to see and planning your visit

The interior preserves a Late Mannerist altar from the mid-17th century, polychromy, a choir and a Baroque polychrome crucifix probably from the 17th century. Sources describe the structure differently: the National Heritage Board gives 1638, while the municipal description dates the wooden section to 1766 and a brick extension to 1870. No fixed sightseeing hours have been confirmed. The parish lists Masses at 06:30, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00 and 17:00 on Sundays and holidays, and 06:30 and 18:00 on weekdays.
