St Michael the Archangel Church in Dębno

The wooden church in Dębno (say "DEMB-no") is St. Michael the Archangel's Church, a late-Gothic log church in the Podhale highlands of southern Poland and one of the best-preserved medieval wooden churches anywhere in Europe. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska" since 2003, it hides an interior painted around 1500 with hundreds of stenciled patterns. If you are traveling between Kraków and Zakopane or the Pieniny Mountains, it is well worth the short detour.

Where it is and how to get there

Dębno Podhalańskie is a small village about 100 km (62 miles) south of Kraków, roughly 1.5–2 hours by car via the S7/Zakopianka highway and Nowy Targ. From Nowy Targ it is only 16 km, and from Zakopane around 35 km. Kraków John Paul II Airport is the most convenient international gateway. A car gives you the most flexibility, and Dębno combines well with the castles at Niedzica and Czorsztyn. There is no dedicated church parking lot; the parish notes that the roadside spaces are not church property, so park considerately.

A short history

A church probably stood here as early as the 13th century. The present building dates from the second half of the 15th century and was built with the horizontal log technique, in which squared timbers are stacked and joined at the corners. The bell tower, with its sloping walls, was added in 1601 and stands about 15 m (49 ft) tall – one of the oldest towers of its kind in Poland. The covered arcades wrapped around the walls, known locally as soboty, date from around 1800 and once sheltered both the timber foundations and the congregation.

The church's reputation reaches well beyond Poland. It was the only wooden church nominated in the national "7 Wonders of Poland" contest, and the World Monuments Fund placed it on its Watch list of endangered heritage sites in 1996 and 1998.

What to see inside

The highlight is the stenciled polychrome from about 1500, painted directly onto the wood of the walls and ceiling. It combines 77 motifs in 12 arrangements – mostly plant and geometric ornament, with figures and animals (look for the deer) mixed in. Experts regard it as the best-preserved decoration of its kind in Poland. Above the rood beam you will spot the eagle of the Jagiellonian dynasty, which ruled Poland when the church was decorated.

Other treasures include:

• the early 16th-century triptych on the high altar, showing the Virgin and Child flanked by St. Michael with his sword and scales and St. Catherine,
• a crucifix from around 1380 whose arms are made from natural tree branches, probably the oldest object in the church,
• a Baroque side altar of 1651 holding Gothic statues of female saints from about 1440,
• a Gothic wall tabernacle and a statue of St. Nicholas from around 1420,
• a copy of a panel painting from about 1280, one of the oldest in Poland (the original is in the Archdiocesan Museum in Kraków).

Fans of Polish television may recognize the interior from the wedding scene in the 1973 series "Janosik."

Opening hours, tickets and visiting rules

According to the parish (as of October 2026), the interior is open to visitors from May 1 to October 31:

• Monday–Friday: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–5:00 p.m.
• Saturday: 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. (afternoons may be reserved for services)
• Sunday: 12:00–5:00 p.m.

There are no tickets; instead, visitors are asked for a donation toward conservation, payable in Polish złoty (PLN). Flash photography is strictly prohibited, and on rainy days access may be limited or suspended because humidity damages the paintwork. Remember that this is a working parish church: dress modestly and keep your voice down.
Visiting in winter (2026/27): the parish does not publish off-season visiting hours. From November to February weekday Mass is at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday Masses at 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. To see the interior in winter, call the parish or the local guide in advance. The church is unheated.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – especially if you are interested in medieval art or traditional timber building. Plan 30–60 minutes. The interior is small and dim, so give your eyes a minute to adjust before studying the patterns. Combine it with the 14th-century Niedzica Castle and Lake Czorsztyn, both about 12 km away, for a rewarding half-day.
