St Michael the Archangel Church in Dębno

The church in Dębno Podhalańskie, at 42 Kościelna Street, is one of Poland’s best-preserved Gothic wooden churches. The present building was erected in the second half of the 15th century using horizontal log construction. Its Podhale character comes through in the shingle single-ridge roof, tower and covered arcades known as soboty. Walk around the church and its enclosure before entering the interior.

Polychrome and furnishings

The interior is covered almost entirely by well-preserved polychrome decoration created around 1500. It contains 77 motifs in 12 compositions and 33 colour variants. Look for the painted walls and ceiling, St George and the dragon, the Jagiellonian eagle and Gothic furnishings in the chancel. The high altar contains an early-16th-century triptych, while the crucifix, dated to around 1380, probably came from an earlier church. The building rewards slow, close attention to detail.

UNESCO and visiting

The church is part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage entry “Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska”, inscribed in 2003. It remains an active church, so services may interrupt sightseeing. According to the parish, interior visits run from 1 May to 31 October: Monday–Friday 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00, Saturday 9:00–12:00, and Sunday 12:00–17:00. Saturday afternoons may be unavailable. In rainy weather, entry may be restricted because humidity can damage the polychrome. Dress appropriately and check photography rules on site.
