Red Marsh Nature Reserve

Czerwone Bagno, or Red Marsh, near Grzędy is one of the most valuable wetland areas in Biebrza National Park. The strict protection zone preserves peatlands, swamp forest and a mosaic of habitats supporting moose and many bird species. This is not a place for free walking across the marshes: visitors may explore it only along the designated trails and paths around Grzędy.

The Czerwone Bagno trail

The best way to see the edge of the protected area is the educational trail starting near the Grzędy forest lodge and field education centre. The approach to the boardwalk is about 4.3 km, followed by roughly 1 km of wooden walkway through wet woodland to a viewing platform at the boundary of Czerwone Bagno. The route shows peatland plants such as bog rosemary and bog bilberry. The return follows the same route.

Protection and wildlife

Czerwone Bagno was already protected as a reserve in the interwar period; after Biebrza National Park was created, the area became a strict protection zone. It is an important refuge for moose, but sightings are never guaranteed. Leaving the trail, making noise or approaching animals can damage the fragile wetland and disturb wildlife.

Before you go

The Grzędy parking area is open daily from 4:00 to 22:00; parking is free and toilets are located beyond the barrier. The park should be visited from dawn to dusk and only on designated routes. Check notices about temporary closures, boardwalk conditions and trail access before setting out. Bring water, insect repellent and footwear suitable for wet ground.
