Churches & monasteries
Holy Trinity Basilica in Strzelno is compact but exceptionally rich in meaning. Its origins reach back to the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, and its interior preserves one of Poland’s most valuable ensembles of Romanesque figural sculpture.
The key works are two Romanesque columns: one of virtues and one of vices. Figures and scenes run through three tiers, creating a stone guide to medieval morality. Study the reliefs one by one rather than passing them with a single glance.
The complex also includes the rotunda of St Procopius and later monastery buildings. Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque layers stand close together, so Strzelno is best understood as a whole ensemble.
This is an active sacred site. Check current interior access and photography rules; allow at least an hour for the basilica and rotunda.
Tripto podpowiada: Approach the columns from the side as well as from the front. Changing light makes the reliefs read like small independent scenes.
