Basilica in Katowice Panewniki

Panewniki Basilica – officially the Basilica of St. Louis the King and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – is a Neo-Romanesque Franciscan church in Katowice, southern Poland, best known for one of the largest moving nativity scenes in Europe. Built in 1906–1907, with twin towers 48 meters (157 feet) high, it is the heart of a complex that includes a friary, a Lourdes grotto and a forest Calvary. Come at Christmas for the crib, or any time of year for a peaceful walk.

Where it is

Panewniki (roughly "pa-NEV-nee-kee") is a leafy district on the south-western edge of Katowice, the main city of Upper Silesia, about 80 km west of Kraków. The nearest railway station is Katowice Ligota; city buses connect the area with downtown. Katowice Airport is about 30 km north of the city.

History

The Franciscans arrived in December 1902. When the church was built, Katowice was part of Prussian Upper Silesia, and on July 19, 1908, Cardinal Georg Kopp, Prince-Bishop of Breslau, consecrated it – the friars' chronicle speaks of some 100,000 faithful. The design was by a Franciscan friar, Brother Mansuetus Fromm. Pope Paul VI raised the church to a minor basilica on November 12, 1974.

What to see

• The basilica – a Latin-cross church 76 meters long, with a high altar completed in 1909 and an organ dedicated in 1925.
• The Panewniki nativity scene – set up by the friars since around 1908; a large crib was built in 1913 and expanded with two wings in 2005–2006. It is Katowice's top attraction over the Christmas season.
• The Lourdes grotto (1904–1905) in the friary park, built from 188,000 bricks clad in volcanic tuff brought from Germany's Eifel region. From May to late August, Sunday Mass at 10:30 am is celebrated here.
• The Panewniki Calvary – chapels and Stations of the Cross in the woods, mostly built from 1937 onward.

Details worth noticing

Look at the two levels of the presbytery: Mass is now celebrated at an altar in the lower part, while the old high altar with its tabernacle remains above. Before the Calvary chapels were built, the Stations of the Cross were paintings hung on posts – according to the friars, with soil brought from Jerusalem. The relics of the early Christian martyrs Romanus and Ptolemy were brought here in 1913. The whole friary complex is a listed heritage site.

The basilica is an active parish and friary church, and entry is free. Sunday Masses: 6:30, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00 am, 12:30, 2:00, 4:30, 6:30 and 8:00 pm; weekdays: 6:00, 7:30, 9:00 am, 12:00 noon and 6:30 pm. Please visit outside services. There is perpetual (24-hour) adoration in the adoration chapel.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially in December and January, when the crib draws families from all over the region – expect crowds on weekends. Outside the season, allow an hour for the basilica and grotto, or up to two hours with the Calvary. Information on site is in Polish.
