Basilica in Katowice Panewniki

The Basilica of Saint Louis IX, King, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Katowice-Panewniki is an important monument of the Franciscan monastery complex. The Neo-Romanesque church was built in 1906–1907 and consecrated in 1908. It received the title of minor basilica in 1974.

Neo-Romanesque basilica and shrine

The church follows a Latin-cross plan with three aisles and a transept. The presbytery contains a baldachin-style high altar with Christ. Panewniki is also a place of veneration of the martyrs Romanus and Ptolemy. The complex includes a Lourdes grotto, consecrated in 1905, and Panewniki Calvary with chapels and Stations of the Cross.

The famous Panewniki nativity scene

The busiest visitor period is around Christmas. The Franciscans build a monumental moving nativity scene in the basilica, a tradition dating back to the early 20th century. The display is among the largest of its kind in Europe and fills the space around the presbytery and side aisles. A separate living nativity scene with animals is set up in the monastery garden. This winter display is the main attraction for families visiting Katowice.

Visiting Panewniki

The basilica is an active parish and monastery church, so plan a visit outside services. The parish publishes the current Mass schedule. Perpetual adoration takes place in the adoration chapel. There is no regular admission ticket for the church, but the nativity scene and Calvary may have different access arrangements. Address: 76 Panewnicka Street, 40-760 Katowice.
