Susiec, Lublin
On Góra Grabowicka hill, among fields north of Susiec, stands a stone-and-timber tower with three viewing levels. It is only about 10 m tall, but the hilltop is open, so from the galleries you can see all around: the houses of Susiec, a patchwork of fields, the valleys of the Tanew and Sopot rivers and the dark wall of forest on the horizon.
The tower was built in 2013 with European Union funds under the LEADER axis of Poland's Rural Development Programme 2007–2013. It has a stone ground floor and wooden galleries under small roofs. Next to it are benches, tables and a wooden shelter for visitors, and there is a small car park by the road. It is one of the newer sights in Susiec and the easiest way to see from above how the village blends into the Roztocze landscape.
Susiec lies where four natural regions meet: Central Roztocze, Eastern Roztocze, the Biłgoraj Plain and the Tarnogród Plateau. From the tower you can clearly see rolling fields giving way to vast wooded areas. In the foreground are farmland and the road into Susiec, further away the river valleys, and in the distance the large forests that surround the municipality on all sides.
The tower stands on the right-hand side of the road from Susiec to Grabowica as you leave Susiec. Allow 15–30 minutes, although the shelter and benches invite a longer stop, for example a picnic at sunset. The galleries are open, so it can be chilly when the wind blows. From the tower it is just a few minutes' drive to the centre of Susiec, where wooden statues of Kargul and Pawlak stand opposite the municipal office, and on to the Nad Tanwią reserve with its cascades. Susiec has plenty of accommodation and is a good base for exploring the whole of Roztocze. On the third Sunday of July the village hosts the Cross-Border Festival of Songs about Roztocze.
