Rysianka

Rysianka (roughly "rih-SHAN-kah") is a 1,322 m (4,337 ft) peak in the Żywiec Beskids, a range of the Western Carpathians in southern Poland near the Slovak border. Hikers come for the wide meadow just below the summit and its PTTK mountain hut at about 1,290 m – one of the finest viewpoints in the Polish Beskids, with the Tatra Mountains visible on clear days. Five marked trails lead up, including the Main Beskid Trail, Poland's longest mountain route.

Where it is and how to get there

Rysianka rises above the villages of Złatna and Żabnica, about 100 km (60 miles) south of Katowice and roughly 2–2.5 hours by car from Kraków. The most popular trailhead is Złatna Huta, reached from Żywiec via Węgierska Górka, Milówka and Ujsoły in about 40 minutes. Without a car, start from Węgierska Górka or Milówka, both on the Żywiec–Zwardoń railway.

The meadows and the view

The summit itself is wooded. The views open from two meadows just below it: Kaziorka on the north side and the large Hala Rysianka to the north-east, where the hut stands. From here you can see the Pilsko massif and Babia Góra, and in clear air the Tatras, the Low Tatras, Veľký Choč and the Malá Fatra in Slovakia. Hala Lipowska, with another hut, is an easy 15-minute walk away; its view is a little narrower.

Below the pass toward Trzy Kopce lies the Pod Rysianką nature reserve, and on the ridge toward Lipowski Wierch there is a peat bog about 200 m long with small pools.

The Rysianka mountain hut

The hut opened on May 16, 1937, built by Gustaw Pustelnik with the support of a Polish ski club. After World War II it reopened in 1947 and was formally taken over by the Polish Tourist Society (PTTK) in 1955; it was modernized in the 1960s–70s and extended in the 1980s. It has about 50 beds in rooms for 2 to 10 people, a buffet and a kitchen, plus a summer campsite. There is no official website with current prices, so ask at the hut or at the PTTK; payment is in złoty (PLN).

• Red Main Beskid Trail from Węgierska Górka, or about 45 min from Trzy Kopce toward Pilsko

A popular loop is Złatna Huta – Rysianka – Hala Lipowska – Złatna Huta, about 3 hours of walking.

Practical tips

Access is free. On sunny weekends the Złatna Huta car park fills quickly, and hikers have reported break-ins, so leave nothing valuable in the car. Trails are well marked with colored blazes but signposts are in Polish. In winter expect ice and strong wind on the open meadow; bring layers year-round.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely, if you want big Carpathian views without technical terrain. Continue along the ridge to Romanka or toward Pilsko, or descend via Hala Bieguńska and Hala Boracza to Milówka for a full-day traverse.
