Gubin, Lubusz
The ruins of the Gubin parish church (say "GOO-been") are what is left of a monumental Gothic church in the middle of a town that was split by the Polish-German border after 1945. The war-damaged building was never rebuilt, but today it is the symbol of Gubin, a venue for Polish-German meetings and a viewpoint, only about 110 km from Berlin. If you are looking for things to do in western Poland, the ruin with its climbable tower is a rewarding stop beside the town hall and the river.
Gubin lies on the Lusatian Neisse River in the Lubusz Voivodeship, right on the German border. The German twin town on the other bank is Guben. It is about 35 km from Cottbus, 45 km from Frankfurt (Oder) and 110 km from Berlin as the crow flies. You can walk across the bridge to the German side.
The first mention of the church dates from the 14th century: sources differ: 1324 or 1294, so the safest way to put it is medieval origins. The church, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was a late Gothic hall about 64 m long with a tower of about 53 m. In late February 1945 a fire left it in ruins; despite efforts to rebuild it, the church was only secured as a permanent ruin in the 1970s. Since around 2005 a Polish foundation, Fara Gubińska, and a German friends' association have worked on a German-Polish meeting centre here.
From the outside you see tall brick walls with Gothic window openings, without a roof or vaults, and a restored tower with a new cap. The ruin stands beside the town hall, making it one of the best photo spots in Gubin. The interior is mostly open during events, and the tower works as a viewpoint with views of both Gubin and Guben and the Neisse.
Walking around the ruin takes 15 to 20 minutes, and about an hour with the tower. The tower has stairs only, so it is not accessible with a wheelchair. Groups should book through the Galeria Ratusz at +48 68 455 82 04.
The hours come from the German tourist office, not from an official site run by the foundation, so confirm them before you go. English signage is not confirmed.
Yes, if you are in the area. Viewing the ruin from outside is free with a strong story about war and a divided town, and the climb gives a view across two countries in one go.
