The Palace on the Isle in Royal Łazienki (Łazienki: "wah-ZHEN-kee") is Warsaw's most photographed palace and one of the top things to do in the Polish capital. Set on an artificial island in Łazienki Park, it was the summer residence of Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. Its Neoclassical facades reflect in the water on both sides, and inside you can walk through the king's restored state rooms and private apartments, along with part of his painting collection.
The palace stands in the middle of Royal Łazienki, a large landscaped park on Warsaw's Royal Route, roughly 4 km south of the Royal Castle and the Old Town and less than 10 km from Warsaw Chopin Airport. Łazienki is part of the "historic city ensemble with the Royal Route and Wilanów", which Poland lists as one of its Monuments of History.
For visitors, the palace tells two big stories at once. The first is the Polish Enlightenment: Stanisław August used architecture and art to promote his idea of a modern, reformed state, and he planned for his collection to become a public museum. The second is World War II: in late 1944, after the Warsaw Uprising, German troops stripped the building, set the interiors on fire and drilled around 1,000 holes for explosives. The charges were never detonated, so the walls survived and the palace could be rebuilt.
The route covers the ground-floor reception rooms and the king's private rooms upstairs. Highlights:
Outside, look for the statues along the roofline and the stone lions by the water. The best photo spots are the north bridge and the Amphitheater on the southern side of the pond.
October 1 – April 30:
Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Hours are longer from May to September. The museum buildings close on certain holidays, including November 1–2, December 24–26 and 31, January 1 and 6, and Easter Saturday and Sunday. Short closures of the palace or the Ballroom for events are announced on the museum's website.
There's no single-palace ticket. A combined ticket for the Palace on the Isle, the Old Orangery with the Royal Theater, the Myślewicki Palace and the Kubicki Stables costs PLN 60 (reduced PLN 30). Children aged 8 and up and young people under 26 pay just PLN 1. Until November 15, 2026, a pricier version (PLN 80/40) also includes a temporary exhibition. Admission is free on Fridays, but only the ground floors are open. You can buy tickets online, at the ticket offices or from ticket machines (there's one in the palace). The park itself is free and open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Yes. You get a rare combination of royal interiors, Enlightenment-era art and a lakeside setting that looks good in every season. Allow about an hour for the palace, or about 2.5 hours if you use the combined ticket for all the buildings. You'll have to leave bags and coats in the cloakroom in the entrance hall. An audio guide is available, and on selected Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the museum runs "quiet hours" for visitors who are sensitive to noise and crowds. In winter, daylight is short, so plan your park walk for the early afternoon.
The address is ul. Agrykola 1. From the city center, take bus 116, 166, 180 or 195 along the Royal Route to the Łazienki Królewskie stop. The palace is a 10–15-minute walk from the gate by the Chopin Monument. Buses 108 and 162 stop on ul. Agrykola, near the north gate. Parking off ul. Parkowa is paid.
Combine the palace with the Chopin Monument, the Old Orangery and the Myślewicki Palace, all within the park. Ujazdów Castle, home to the Center for Contemporary Art, is about 1 km to the north.
