Łazienki Królewskie (roughly "wah-ZHEN-kee kroo-LEV-skyeh"), or the Royal Baths Park, is Warsaw's most beautiful park and the former summer residence of Poland's last king, Stanisław August Poniatowski. Spread over about 76 hectares (190 acres) along the Royal Route, it combines a lakeside Neoclassical palace, an island theater, pavilions, peacock-filled lawns and the famous Chopin Monument. Entry to the gardens is free, making it one of the best things to do in Warsaw in any season.
The park takes its name from a 17th-century bathhouse (łaźnia) designed by the Dutch-born architect Tylman van Gameren for the aristocrat Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski. In 1764, the newly elected King Stanisław August bought the estate and, with architects Domenico Merlini and Johann Christian Kamsetzer, transformed the bathhouse into the elegant Palace on the Isle, enlarged mainly in 1788–1793. Around it he created a landscape park with canals, ponds, sculptures and pavilions — a showcase of Enlightenment taste in a country that would soon lose its independence in the partitions.
In December 1944, after the Warsaw Uprising, German troops doused the palace interiors with petrol and set them on fire. They also drilled holes for explosives but never detonated them, which allowed the building to be rebuilt after the war. Since 1995, Łazienki has been an independent museum, and the palace was thoroughly restored in 2012–2015.
Families will find a playground in the southern part of the gardens (water features run June–September).

Individual tickets can be bought online on the museum's website, at the ticket desks or from ticket machines. The museum occasionally closes rooms for events, so check announcements on lazienki-krolewskie.pl before your visit.
A walk through the gardens takes 1–2 hours. The museum estimates about 2.5 hours for the combined ticket and around 3.5 hours with the temporary exhibition. It is absolutely worth it: few European capitals have a royal park this atmospheric so close to the center, and the autumn colors reflected in the palace lake are spectacular. Quiet visiting hours (selected Sundays, 2:00–4:00 pm) are offered for visitors who prefer a calmer environment.
The park lies on the Royal Route about 3.5 km (2 miles) south of the Royal Castle and Old Town. The main western gates are on Aleje Ujazdowskie, by the Belweder Palace, the Chopin Monument and the Tea House. Buses 116, 166, 180 and 195 stop at "Łazienki Królewskie," about 100 m from the gate by the Chopin Monument; lines 116 and 180 run along the Royal Route from the Old Town. Other gates are on ul. Myśliwiecka (north) and ul. Gagarina (south). There is a paid parking lot inside the museum grounds, entered from ul. Parkowa.
Nearby you can visit the University of Warsaw Botanic Garden and Ujazdów Castle, home to the Centre for Contemporary Art.
