Museums
Poznań, Greater Poland
The Poznań Museum of Armaments (Muzeum Uzbrojenia) is an open-air collection of tanks, aircraft, helicopters and artillery inside Citadel Park, the site of the old Prussian Fort Winiary, with a small indoor exhibition in a surviving fort building. Run by the Greater Poland Independence Museum since the 1960s, it draws over 40,000 visitors a year and is one of the most popular sights in Poznań for families and military-history fans.
Poznań (pronounced roughly "POZ-nahn") lies in western Poland, about three hours by train from Berlin and from Warsaw. Citadel Park, about 2 km north of the Old Market Square, occupies the site of Fort Winiary, built by Prussia in 1828–1842 as the core of the Posen fortress. In February 1945 it saw the last stand of the German garrison during the Soviet-Polish battle for the city. In the 1960s most of the ruins were cleared to create a park of about 100 hectares.
The museum was founded in the 1960s and renamed several times, taking its present name in 1998. In 2026 it marks its 60th year.
The outdoor display includes more than a dozen military vehicles and several aircraft, among them:
Indoors, displays cover weapons and the history of Poznań's fortifications. Labels are mostly in Polish, so a guided tour in English (PLN 90, booked in advance) adds a lot.
As of October 2026:
Admission is PLN 15 (reduced PLN 10), children under 7 free, and free for everyone on Tuesdays. A combined ticket with the nearby Poznań Army Museum costs PLN 20 (reduced PLN 12).
Plan 45–90 minutes. The building has step-free access and the indoor exhibition is on one level; staff can open an easier western entrance to the outdoor area. There is no restroom inside the museum – the nearest is about 80 m away. Kids usually love the yard full of tanks and planes.
The museum is on Armii Poznań Avenue in the southern part of Citadel Park. Trams and buses stop nearby (Armii Poznań, Pasieka, Urząd Marszałkowski), and Poznań Garbary railway station is close. There is no museum car park; paid parking surrounds the park.
Stay longer in Citadel Park to see the Poznań Army Museum, the Commonwealth War Cemetery and Magdalena Abakanowicz's sculpture group "Unrecognized". For anyone interested in 20th-century military history, the Armaments Museum is well worth an hour – especially on a free Tuesday.
