Wierzenica, Greater Poland
St. Nicholas Church in Wierzenica (say "vyeh-zheh-NEE-tsah") is the oldest church on the Trail of Wooden Churches around Zielonka Forest, a short drive from Poznań in western Poland. This log-built village church, with a shingled roof and a tower added in the 18th century, is also the resting place of philosopher August Cieszkowski. His tomb, with bronze doors that won an award at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair, is one of the finest pieces of Polish Romantic funerary art.
Wierzenica lies just beyond Poznań's city limits, a few kilometers north of the town of Swarzędz, on the edge of Puszcza Zielonka Landscape Park. By car, it takes about 20 minutes from central Poznań; park by the church. Bus 493 links the village with Swarzędz, which has trains to Poznań. Poznań itself has an international airport (Poznań–Ławica) and direct trains from Warsaw and Berlin, each roughly 2.5–3 hours away.
The village was first recorded in 1154, and a church has stood here since at least 1335. The present building dates from the second half of the 16th century; the trail's official site gives 1560–1561 for the nave and chancel, while other sources say only "before 1589." The tower came in the 1770s, and the church has been a listed monument since 1932.
Cieszkowski (1814–1894) was a philosopher and economist who settled in Wierzenica in 1842. He co-founded the Poznań Society of Friends of Learning and set up an agricultural college in 1870 whose tradition lives on in today's Poznań University of Life Sciences. In the 19th century the region was part of Prussia, and figures like Cieszkowski helped keep Polish scholarship alive. His close friend, the Romantic poet Zygmunt Krasiński, visited him here.
