Lakes
Szczecin, West Pomeranian
Emerald Lake (Jezioro Szmaragdowe, roughly "YEZH-oh-roh shmah-RAHG-doh-veh") is a flooded former chalk quarry hidden in the beech woods of the Bukowa Forest, on the eastern edge of Szczecin. It is famous for its green, emerald-tinted water and steep wooded banks that blaze gold and red in the fall. Locals love it for walks, and it's an easy half-day nature escape without leaving the city limits.
Szczecin (say "SHCHEH-cheen") lies in northwest Poland, about 150 km (93 mi) from Berlin – roughly two hours by car or regional train. The lake is in the Zdroje district on the right bank of the Oder, off ul. Kopalniana, around 7–8 km (about 5 mi) from the city center. There's a free parking lot at the entrance to the Zdroje Forest Park, which fills up on weekends. You can also take city transit to Zdroje – check the ZDiTM Szczecin journey planner for the current route.
Chalk and marl were dug here from 1862 to supply a nearby cement works. In 1925 miners broke through a water-bearing layer and the pit flooded – all the workers escaped. Springs have fed the lake ever since. After mining ended, the surrounding slopes were reclaimed naturally by forest, mostly beech.
Key figures:
The striking color comes from dissolved calcium carbonate and light reflecting off the chalky bottom.
The lake is part of the Szczecin Landscape Park "Puszcza Bukowa" (Beech Forest), with paths circling the water. Look out for:
A loop around the lake with the viewpoint takes 1–1.5 hours. Note that the regional landscape park authority announced plans in June 2026 for a pier, two viewing terraces and new bank reinforcement, so parts of the shore may be fenced off during works.
Yes, if you like nature and photography – especially in October, when the beech forest turns gold. Combine it with a longer hike through the hills of the Bukowa Forest.
