Szczecin, West Pomeranian
Jasne Błonia (roughly "YAS-neh BWOH-nya", meaning "Bright Meadows") and Kasprowicz Park form Szczecin's best-loved green space: a broad lawn lined with rows of plane trees that flows into a large park around Lake Rusałka. Jasne Błonia is home to 213 London plane trees – the largest stand of this species in Poland. It's the city's go-to place for a stroll, a picnic or an afternoon with kids, and in fall it is one of the most photogenic spots in Szczecin.
Szczecin (say "SHCHEH-cheen") lies in northwest Poland, about 150 km (93 mi) from Berlin – two hours by car or regional train. Jasne Błonia sits next to the City Hall (pl. Armii Krajowej) in the Łękno district, about 2 km (1.2 mi) northwest of the Old Town. Trams and buses stop near City Hall, or you can walk from downtown in about half an hour.
The land belonged to the Quistorps, a family of Stettin industrialists. Johannes Quistorp donated the grounds on which Quistorp Park – today's Kasprowicz Park – was laid out in 1900, and in 1925–1927 the green square then called Quistorp-Aue was created beside the grand municipal building.
After the war, when Stettin became Polish Szczecin, the square hosted major gatherings. The biggest came on June 11, 1987, when Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass here for hundreds of thousands of people. Since 1995 the square has borne his name, and a statue of the pope stands on the City Hall side.
Beyond the eagles lies Kasprowicz Park – about 27 hectares (67 acres) of greenery on the slopes above Lake Rusałka. Together with part of the Arkoński Forest Park it forms a landscape complex of nearly 97 hectares. Highlights include:
To the north is the Stefan Kownas Dendrological Garden, and a reconstructed rose garden reopened nearby in 2007.
The area is open year-round and free. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the square and a loop around the lake. Wide paths suit strollers, and it's popular with joggers and dog walkers (keep dogs leashed).
Winter 2026/27: from November to March the plane trees are bare and flowerbeds and the rose garden are dormant. A walk is still pleasant, especially after fresh snow, but days are short and unplowed park paths can be slippery.
Yes, if you have half a day in Szczecin and want a break from museums – especially in spring and fall. Combine it with the Arkoński Forest Park or, a few kilometers west, the vast Central Cemetery, Poland's largest park cemetery.
