St. John the Baptist Church in Brusiek

The wooden Church of St. John the Baptist in Brusiek is a church on the edge of a village among the forests of Lubliniec County. It is a filial church of the parish in Kalety-Drutarnia and part of the Wooden Architecture Trail of Silesian Voivodeship. Visit it for its authentic, modest form and historic painted decoration.

History and structure

Dendrochronological research from 2009 dates the chancel, nave and tower to around 1592–1593. The church was previously dated to the mid-17th century. The sacristy and vestibule are later, and the church stands on the site of a probable 15th-century predecessor. It is an oriented, single-nave log building with a square post-and-beam tower on the west. The roof and parts of the walls are shingled.

Polychromy and interior

The most valuable feature is the stencilled polychromy associated with Wawrzyniec Grochowski and dated to 1693. The visible decoration was restored and supplemented later, including around 1930. The church also preserves a late-19th-century Neo-Gothic high altar and a wooden baptismal font from 1892. Outside, look for the tower and the small bell turret with its bulbous cupola.

Visiting and renovation

Regular sightseeing hours have not been confirmed. The National Heritage Board recommends notifying the parish priest in Kalety-Drutarnia in advance. The church website reports renovation work: since 15 March 2026, Masses have been held in Drutarnia. Check brusiek.pl or call +48 34 357 77 56 before travelling. The exterior can be combined with a route through Koszęcin, Kalety and the Lubliniec forests.
