Shipwreck Graveyard near Rewa

In the waters of Puck Bay near Rewa and Osłonino lie the remains of several ships, which divers call the Cmentarzysko Wraków (Shipwreck Graveyard). The best known is the wreck of the "Helena" – a wooden coastal sailing vessel that sank in March 1945. This is a site for divers and Baltic history enthusiasts, not an onshore attraction with a ticket office or a marked visitor route.

The wreck of the "Helena"

The "Helena" was a sailing vessel built in 1872 and operated by owners from Rewa. She sank in March 1945 as a result of Red Army military operations. Survey work identified an oak hull with smooth carvel planking, fitted with an internal combustion engine. The wreck itself measures 13.5 m long and 4.5 m wide. Surviving parts include closely spaced frames, the outer and inner planking, an 8.4-metre keelson and an engine with a flywheel 80 cm in diameter.

What the "graveyard" name means

"Shipwreck Graveyard" is an informal name. Three historic vessels have been recorded in the Rewa area, and the "Helena" is the best documented of them. The spot marked on maps as the Shipwreck Graveyard lies about 500 m from Osłonino, not in the centre of Rewa. There are no signs or facilities on land – everything worth seeing is underwater.

Before you dive

Plan your dive with an instructor or a local dive centre, and check the weather, visibility and boat traffic in advance. The wreck is an archaeological monument: do not touch it, move or remove anything, and do not swim inside the structure. If you do not dive, the shores around Rewa and Osłonino are good for a walk along the bay – the story of the "Helena" is then better enjoyed through descriptions and photos than by searching for it from the beach.
