Błędne Skały

Błędne Skały (roughly "BWEN-deh SKAH-wih", meaning "Errant Rocks") is a sandstone rock maze in Table Mountains National Park in southwestern Poland, on the edge of the spa town of Kudowa-Zdrój and close to the Czech border. At about 853 m above sea level, giant blocks of rock form a network of corridors, cracks and chambers that you explore on a narrow one-way path. It is one of the most memorable short walks in the Sudetes, and it doubled as a film set for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Where it is and how to get there

The Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe) lie in Lower Silesia, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Wrocław, the nearest big city and airport. Most visitors base themselves in Kudowa-Zdrój, Polanica-Zdrój or Karłów. A narrow access road climbs to an upper car park right by the maze. Traffic runs in alternating one-way slots: cars go up on the hour (until 15 minutes past) and come down between 30 and 45 minutes past each hour. Driving up costs PLN 40 per car or motorcycle (PLN 20 for vehicles carrying disabled passengers, PLN 80 for coaches). In October the road is open for ascents 9:00 am–2:00 pm, with the last descent at 3:30 pm. Hikers can also walk in on the yellow trail (Duszniki-Zdrój–Karłów) or the green trail (Polanica-Zdrój–Karłów).

What you will see

The route is only a few hundred meters long, yet it takes longer than you might expect because of the bottlenecks. The walls rise 6 to 11 meters, and in the tightest spots the gap is just a few dozen centimeters wide, so expect to turn sideways and duck. Look out for named formations such as Kurza Stopka ("Hen's Foot"), a mushroom-shaped rock on a slender stem, plus the Table Boulder, the Tunnel and the Kitchen. The Three Crosses Boulder once marked the border between the County of Kłodzko and the Kingdom of Bohemia; carved dates start in 1616, and local tradition links them to captured smugglers. The final viewpoint looks out over Szczeliniec Wielki, the Czech Broumov Highlands and, on clear days, the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains).

A bit of geology and history

The rocks are thick layers of Late Cretaceous sandstone laid down on an ancient sea floor. After the mountains were uplifted, water and frost widened the joints in the rock until deep corridors appeared. The roughly 21-hectare site was a nature reserve before the national park was created. Before 1945, when this area was part of Germany, it was known as Wilde Löcher ("Wild Holes").

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The trail is ticketed and capped at 350 people per hour. A regular ticket costs PLN 16, reduced PLN 8; children under 7 enter free but still need a zero-price ticket. The park strongly recommends buying online at pngs.gov.pl, especially on summer days and weekends from May to November, as on-site slots can sell out. Tickets are non-refundable. In October the trail is open daily 9:00 am–4:00 pm, and the same hours apply from November 1 to 11. Winter 2026/27 hours have not been published, so check the park's visitor announcements before a winter trip.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy hands-on scenery rather than long hikes: the maze is short, varied and great fun for older children. Keep in mind:

• No dogs or other pets are allowed on the trail.
• It is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, and big backpacks get stuck.
• Rock and steps are slippery after rain, and it is noticeably cooler inside the maze.
• Early morning or late afternoon is calmest.

Combine it with Szczeliniec Wielki, the park's highest point, or the Chapel of Skulls in Czermna, part of Kudowa-Zdrój.
