Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kołobrzeg

The Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Kołobrzeg (say "koh-WOH-bzheg") is the Baltic resort town's greatest monument: a five-aisled Gothic brick church whose massive tower block rises over the old town. Inside are rare medieval treasures, including a bronze candelabrum from 1327 and a font from 1355, and the tower houses a Diocesan Museum and a viewing terrace. Even if you came to Kołobrzeg for the beach, it is the one historic sight not to miss.

Where it is and how to get there

Kołobrzeg lies on Poland's Baltic coast, about 140 km (85 miles) northeast of Szczecin and roughly 290 km from Berlin; Szczecin–Goleniów Airport is the nearest international airport. The basilica stands at ul. Mariacka 5, about a 10-minute walk from the train station and a few minutes from the town hall.

History

Building started on the site of an older church; the first Mass was celebrated on the construction site in 1321. Over the next two centuries the church grew, its two towers were merged into a single westwork, and a central spire was added in the late 15th century. A collegiate church from the 14th century, it became Lutheran in the 16th century, when the town was the German port of Kolberg. In March 1945, during the battle for Festung Kolberg, Soviet artillery left it badly damaged. Handed to the Catholic Church in 1957, it was rebuilt and fully reopened in 1974, became a co-cathedral in 1972 and was named a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II on June 10, 1986.

What to see

• The seven-branched candelabrum of 1327, cast in bronze by Johann Apengeter and about 4 m (13 ft) tall.
• A bronze baptismal font from 1355.
• Choir stalls from around 1340 and councilors' stalls from the early 15th century.
• A 14th-century Tree of Life crucifix, triptychs from around 1500 and the wooden Schlieffen chandelier of 1523.
• The striking leaning pillars and lofty vaults.

Opening hours, tickets and etiquette

As of October 2026, according to the parish:

• Monday–Saturday 9:00 am–4:30 pm (Friday break 2:30–3:45 pm)
• Sunday 2:00–3:30 pm

Visits are not allowed during services or adoration after the 5:00 pm Mass. Church entry is free. The parish asks visitors not to take photos or film inside. The tower terrace and Diocesan Museum are a separate, paid visit with their own hours; prices vary between sources, so check on site (cash in PLN is handy). Allow 30–45 minutes for the church, about 1.5 hours with the tower.

Mass times

It is very much a working parish. Sunday Masses are at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 am, 1:00, 5:00 and 7:00 pm; weekday Masses at 7:00 and 8:00 am and 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Attending a service is a good way to hear the 28-stop organ, but plan sightseeing outside these times. Families usually find the giant candelabrum and the crooked pillars the most memorable part.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely — it is one of the most impressive Gothic churches on the Polish coast. Combine it with the old town, the Museum of Polish Arms, the lighthouse and the pier, all within easy walking distance.
