Babia Góra

Babia Góra, specifically Diablak (1,725 m above sea level), is the highest peak of the Żywiec Beskids and the whole Western Beskids. Its open summit offers wide views, but the massif is also known for sudden weather changes, fog and strong winds. This is a demanding mountain hike rather than a short viewpoint walk.

Nature and protection

The massif is protected by Babia Góra National Park, established in 1954. The trails cross vegetation zones with dwarf mountain pine and species typical of high mountains. Babia Góra is also part of the UNESCO biosphere reserve network. Hiking is allowed only on marked trails; dogs and drones are prohibited in the park.

Routes

Popular approaches start in Zawoja Markowa and at Krowiarki Pass. The route via Markowe Szczawiny and Brona Pass can be combined with a longer ridge walk. The yellow Academic Perć is more demanding and may be closed in winter or during difficult conditions, so check the park’s current notices before setting out. A return hike to Diablak takes several hours and requires good fitness.

Practical information

Entry to Babia Góra National Park trails is paid. On the verification date, a one-day ticket cost PLN 8 standard and PLN 4 reduced; tickets are available online and at entry points. Check the forecast, closure notices and ridge conditions before starting. Carry water, a map, a charged phone and an extra layer: the summit can be cold even in summer.
