Rydzyna Castle

Rydzyna Castle (say "rih-DZIH-nah"), officially the Royal Castle in Rydzyna, is the largest Baroque castle in the Greater Poland region, set in a small town about 10 km south of Leszno in western Poland. Once home to King Stanisław Leszczyński and later to the Sułkowski princes, it was burned out in 1945 and painstakingly rebuilt. Today it works as a hotel, yet its restored ballroom and stucco-filled rooms are open to visitors, making it an easy stop between Poznań and Wrocław.

Where it is and how to get there

Rydzyna lies right by the S5 expressway, roughly 80 km from both Poznań and Wrocław, so either city works as a base; both have international airports. By car the drive takes a little over an hour from either city, depending on traffic. Without a car, take a train to Leszno, the nearest major rail hub about 10 km away, and continue by local bus or taxi. There is parking close to the castle square.

A short history

A Gothic castle stood here from the early 15th century. In the late 17th century the Leszczyński family turned it into a Baroque palace designed by the Italian-born architects Józef Szymon Bellotti and Pompeo Ferrari. Between 1705 and 1709 it served as the residence of Stanisław Leszczyński, the Polish king who later became Duke of Lorraine and father-in-law of Louis XV of France. Russian troops set it on fire in 1709 during the Great Northern War, but much of the stucco survived.

After losing his throne, Leszczyński sold the estate to Aleksander Józef Sułkowski, whose architect Karol Marcin Frantz added Rococo interiors. The family ran a school here, and between 1928 and 1939 the castle housed a renowned boarding school. In January 1945 the building burned to a shell. From 1970 the Association of Polish Mechanical Engineers and Technicians (SIMP) rebuilt it, recreating the finest rooms from prewar photographs; the work was completed in 1989 and won a Europa Nostra award in 1994. Since 2017 the castle and the planned town around it have been a national Historic Monument.

What to see

• The ballroom, two stories high with 22 Corinthian columns and a ceiling painting reconstructed from old photos.
• The Sea Hall, decorated with marine-themed sculpture.
• Rooms with elaborate stucco ceilings, fireplaces and period furniture.
• The four-winged courtyard, the bridge over the moat and the landscaped park (about 6.6 hectares) on the east side.

Allow about an hour for the interiors and another hour for the park and the little market square, which was laid out on the same axis as the palace.

Tickets and opening hours

Tickets are sold at the hotel reception on the ground floor. As of October 2026 the castle lists:

• self-guided visit with a printed guide: 26 PLN,
• guided tour: 38 PLN standard, 26 PLN reduced, for groups of 10 or more and only with advance booking,
• free entry to the historic rooms for hotel guests.

Standard visiting times are Monday to Friday 8 am–4 pm and 7–10 pm, and weekends noon–5 pm. Weddings and events take place mostly on Saturdays, so call ahead (+48 65 529 50 40) to make sure the rooms are open. English-language information on site is limited, so the printed guide or a translation app helps.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy grand interiors without crowds. Unlike the big castles of southern Poland, Rydzyna is quiet, and you can even sleep inside it, which makes it a good winter stop when outdoor sights are limited. The restaurant has a wine cellar in the medieval basement.
