Gdynia, Pomeranian
Kamienna Góra ("ka-MYEN-na GOO-ra," Stone Hill) is a wooded hill right above central Gdynia and the seaside boulevard, with the city's most popular viewpoint. From the terrace beneath a tall cross you look out over the port, the marina, the South Pier with the tall ship Dar Pomorza and the whole Bay of Gdańsk. You can ride a tiny funicular to the top or climb the stairs. Kamienna Góra is also Gdynia's smallest and one of its most exclusive neighborhoods, full of prewar villas.
The hill is a glacial moraine. It once rose to 52.4 m, but in the interwar years its western part was dug away for a brickworks; its highest natural point is now 49.5 m (162 ft). The district of the same name covers just 0.65 km² and is home to around 3,600 people.
In the 1920s and 1930s, artists, entrepreneurs and officials of the booming port city built villas on its slopes, and the historic neighborhood is now a protected monument. During the German occupation the district was called Steinberg, and a Gestapo office operated on today's Korzeniowskiego Street. The viewpoint is crowned by a cross about 25 m (82 ft) high, erected in the 1990s.
Architecture fans should look for the villas designed by Zbigniew Kupiec and Tadeusz Kossak – Countess Łosiowa's villa, a textbook example of cubic functionalism, and Piotrowski's villa with its nautical touches.
Allow 30–45 minutes for the viewpoint, or 1.5–2 hours if you add a walk past the villas; the city's modernism website has a Kamienna Góra route. Morning light and sunset are best for photos. The stairs from the boulevard are steep, so with a stroller or wheelchair use the funicular. Is it worth visiting? Yes – it is free, close to the center and gives you the best view in Gdynia.
The lower funicular station is about 5 minutes on foot from Kościuszko Square (bus stop Skwer Kościuszki – InfoBox) and about 20 minutes from Gdynia Główna station. Gdańsk is roughly 30 minutes away by SKM train, and Gdańsk airport (about 23 km) has PKM trains to Gdynia Główna. Paid parking is under Grunwaldzki Square and on Sędzickiego Street.
