Hel, Pomeranian
The Hel Headland is the sandy tip of the Hel Peninsula (say it like "hell"), the spot where a 35 km sand spit north of Gdańsk finally runs out and the open Baltic meets the Bay of Gdańsk. Since 2013 a stone cairn called the Kashubian Mound has marked it with the words "Hel – the beginning of Poland," while the forest behind the beach hides gun positions and bunkers from 1939. It is an easy walk from Hel Lighthouse and the natural finale of a day on the peninsula.
The inscription is symbolic. Hel is where both the peninsula and the railroad end, so Poles call it the beginning, or the end, of the country. The actual northernmost point of Poland is at Jastrzębia Góra, west of Władysławowo. For decades the headland was a military zone and was opened to civilians only after the army pulled out.
The whole peninsula has been part of the Coastal Landscape Park since 1978. Keep to marked paths across the dunes. "No swimming" signs have stood on the beach here, so treat it as a place to walk, not swim. Keep dogs on a leash.
The flat beach and short walk make it family-friendly, but watch children around the bunker ruins in the forest, which are open concrete structures without railings. Bring water and sun protection, as there is no shade on the sand and no services at the tip itself.
It is open year-round and free. In summer, come early in the morning or near sunset to avoid crowds. From late fall to early spring it can be fiercely windy, and storms wash over parts of the beach, so dress warmly and check the forecast. Spring and fall migration brings many birds over the peninsula.
Take the train from Gdynia to Hel (about 2 hours), or come by seasonal water tram from Gdańsk, Gdynia or Sopot. From Hel station, walk to the lighthouse on ul. Bałtycka, then follow the forest road southeast for about 1 km. You cannot drive to the tip; use the paid lots in town. Strollers manage the forest road but struggle on sand.
Allow 1–1.5 hours for the round walk from the lighthouse; add the lighthouse (in season), the battery and the Museum of Coastal Defence for a half-day.
Yes: few places in Poland show so clearly how thin this strip of land is, with sea and bay meeting at your feet.
